Giving Flowers as a Wedding Anniversary gift

The history behind one of the longest gift-giving traditions we know.

There are so many times in your life when giving flowers as a gift happens. But where did this history start? Who decided that buying flowers for your birthday or wedding anniversary was a thing? I asked my grandmother about the tradition and she confirmed it was a real thing they tried to follow in her days. Giving simple but beautiful gifts such as flowers to mark the celebration of another year of marriage together. She could rattle off most of her gifts from my grandfather because they were all tied to a more meaningful symbolic suggestion.

Now as a florist I’m well aware of the traditional flowers gifts that are given at two very specific times:

4th year of Marriage is Flowers

28th Year is Orchids

But I wanted to find out some more about how this wonderful tradition started.

I went looking on the interwebs to try and find as much information as possible, after much searching it was believed to have started in Ancient Rome, but there wasn’t any actual solid proof until the 18th century in German culture, whilst Among English language regions, it was around the 1800’s. Today you may hear people speak of those who make the silver or gold wedding anniversary and this is what they are referring to.

This time honoured tradition gives people the opportunity to think outside of the box and get creative, often looking to find a gift that is still very much handcrafted like in the history books instead of buying something mass-produced.

I will always love seeing a beautiful bunch of flowers light up someone’s face and a room in their house, the visual beauty and the smell are something you cant go past when you want o show that someone special just how much you value them.
