How to Care for Spring Blooms – Pro Tips to Make Your Flowers Last

Keeping the Joy Alive

There’s nothing quite like fresh flowers – the colour, the scent, the instant lift they bring to a space.

But once they’re home, most people ask the same question: how do I keep them looking beautiful for as long as possible?

The good news is that a few small habits make a huge difference. Here’s how to care for your blooms this Spring so they stay fresher, brighter, and more Blooming Lovely for days to come.

1. Start with a Clean Vase

It might sound simple, but a clean vase is the first secret to longer-lasting flowers.
Any leftover bacteria or residue from previous arrangements can shorten your flowers’ life.
Wash your vase with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly before filling it with fresh, cool water.

2. Triàm Those Stems

Cut about 2cm from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle before placing them in water.
This opens up more surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase.

If you’ve had your flowers for a few days, give them another quick trim to refresh the ends.

3. Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Leaves sitting in water start to rot quickly, which encourages bacteria and cloudiness.
Remove any foliage that will be submerged – it’ll help your flowers stay healthy longer.

4. Change the Water Regularly

Every two days, empty the vase, rinse it, and refill with clean, cool water. If you want to go the extra mile, dissolve a tiny pinch of sugar and a drop of bleach – it mimics store-bought flower food.

5. Keep Flowers Cool & Out of Direct Sunlight

Spring sunshine is beautiful, but your flowers prefer a little shade.
Keep them away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and drafts – too much warmth makes them wilt faster.

6. Give Them Space

Flowers need airflow, too!
Don’t crowd too many stems in one vase – they’ll stay fresher when there’s room to breathe.

7. Remove Wilted Blooms Promptly

If one flower starts to fade, remove it from the bunch.
It releases ethylene gas, which can cause neighbouring blooms to deteriorate more quickly.

8. Support Local, Fresh Flowers

Buying from local florists like Blooming Lovely means your flowers start fresher and last longer.

Our blooms don’t travel far – they come straight from local growers to your doorstep across Kiama, Gerringong and the South Coast.
